Terms of Use
Last updated: October 25, 2026 (version 1, in force at publication).
These terms govern the use of Pictolang, operated by Logiciels Scalinata inc., a company of Quebec (Canada) ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the service, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use Pictolang. The English version of these terms governs; a French translation is provided for convenience only.
1. The service
Pictolang is an illustrated vocabulary quiz in several languages at once: each question shows a picture and a short hint, you write the word in each of the languages you have chosen, and the service checks your answers, highlights your mistakes, shows the plural form of the word, and lets you set aside the words you already know. The service keeps track of your progress by word and by language.
2. Your account
- An account is created with a valid email address that is yours, or with a Google sign-in, and with accurate information. You do not create an account with another person's address. This address identifies your account and cannot be changed: to use another one, create a new account.
- The account is personal: you do not share it and you do not resell it. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for what is done from your account.
- There is no minimum age. If you have not reached the age of majority in your country of residence (18 in Quebec), you may use Pictolang only with the authorization of a parent or guardian. That parent or guardian accepts these terms with you and on your behalf, and is responsible for your use of the service, including any purchase. This authorization also covers the collection and use of your personal information (see the privacy policy). By creating an account, you declare that you have this authorization.
- Individual or organization member. An account is either individual or an organization member account (a school, company or body that provides the access); it never changes from one to the other. The rules specific to organization accounts are in article 15.
3. Free trial
The free trial lasts 7 days or 4 quizzes, whichever limit is reached first. A quiz counts toward the limit as soon as it is started. The trial starts when your email address is confirmed (or immediately for a Google sign-in).
The trial is offered only once per person: to enforce this, we keep a fingerprint of the email address used (the address itself is not kept for this purpose) for 12 months after the account is deleted (see the privacy policy). An address that has already had the trial does not get another one. No payment method is requested for the trial, and no amount is ever charged automatically when it ends.
4. Plans and payment
- Full access to the service is obtained by buying a plan. The available plans, their length and their price are shown on the site before you buy.
- A plan is paid once. There is no automatic renewal: at the end of the period, access stops and nothing is charged. To continue, you buy a new plan.
- Prices are displayed and paid in euros. If your payment method (card, PayPal or other) is in another currency, your bank or payment provider performs the conversion, at its own rate, and may apply bank or payment fees.
- Displayed prices are exclusive of taxes. The applicable taxes depend on your country or region of residence: they are added to the price of the plan. They are calculated and collected by our official reseller, Paddle.com, shown before you pay, and itemized on your receipt.
- Payment is processed by our official reseller, Paddle.com (Merchant of Record): Paddle is the seller of your plan; it collects the payment, collects and remits the applicable taxes, issues your receipt and handles refunds, and its own terms of purchase also apply to the transaction. Logiciels Scalinata inc. provides the Pictolang service. The payment methods offered (card, PayPal or others) are those that Paddle provides.
- We may change the prices and the plans offered. This affects only future purchases: a plan already paid keeps its length and its price.
- The end date of a plan is calculated in calendar months and rounded in your favour (for example, a month bought on January 31 ends on March 1, not on February 28); a plan is added to the access you have left; the end date is shown with the time, in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
- We may extend your access without payment, for example by means of a free access code or bonus hours. This extension is a gesture on our part, without obligation: it has no monetary value, is not refundable, cannot be transferred, cannot be converted into money and does not acknowledge any fault on our part. A free access code is valid only once per account; it may expire or be deactivated.
- Organizations. Organization plans (article 15) are sold and invoiced separately, outside the online checkout.
5. Refunds
You may request a refund within 14 days of your purchase of a plan. This refund is not guaranteed: because purchases are processed by our official reseller, Paddle.com, it is Paddle that examines the request and decides, according to its own refund policy. A request may be refused, in particular in case of abuse or fraud; the use you have made of the service is one of the factors taken into account. After 14 days, refunds are in principle refused, unless the law requires otherwise. You may make your request through Paddle (paddle.net) or by writing to us; the refund policy explains the steps to follow.
- a refund, even a partial one, ends the access provided by the refunded purchase. To buy again after a refund, you will need to contact us; for this purpose, we keep your email address, your customer identifier with our reseller and the date of the refund for 6 years (see the privacy policy);
- the law applicable to your purchase may give you other rights, which these terms do not limit;
- if we end your access without your having breached these terms (see article 10), we then refund the unused part of the plan, pro rata.
For any question about a payment, write to us.
6. Permitted use
You use Pictolang for your personal use. You may not:
- systematically download or copy the content of the service (pictures, words, hints), or redistribute it;
- extract the content in an automated way (bots, scraping);
- share your account, or get around the free trial or the security measures;
- disrupt the operation of the service or try to access data that is not yours.
You are responsible for the content you send us (what you type into the service, messages sent through the contact form of the scalinatasoftware.com site, account information). You may not send us content that is:
- unlawful, defamatory, insulting, threatening or harassing;
- infringing the rights of others (copyright, privacy), or containing another person's personal information without their consent;
- intended to make you pass for someone else.
This content is not published: only you and our authorized staff have access to it. We do not monitor it in advance, but we may refuse or delete a message or content that breaches this article and, where the law requires it, disclose it to the authorities (see the privacy policy).
7. Intellectual property
The service, its code, its design and its content belong to Logiciels Scalinata inc. or its licensors; the rights in the works of third parties that it reproduces, where applicable, remain with their authors. The pictures in the service are drawings made by us. What you type into the service belongs to you; we use it only to provide you with the service.
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable right of access, for the length of your trial or your plan. This is not a licence over the content itself.
The messages and suggestions you send us are used to reply to you and to improve our services. You authorize us to take them into account, without compensation; we do not publish your name or your message.
8. Accuracy of the content
The content may contain errors (a word, an article, a plural form, a pronunciation, a hint or a picture). If you spot one, report it to us: we will correct it as soon as possible. You use the content at your own risk and, to the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for the consequences of an error, except in cases of gross or intentional fault and subject to the mandatory rights of consumers, which no clause hereof can exclude.
The content of the service is not necessarily reviewed by a native speaker of each language, and its automatic correction may contain errors: the service compares your answer to the forms stored for each word, so a valid synonym that is not among the accepted answers is counted as an error. An error in the content or in the correction does not engage our liability, within the limits of article 9. The service is a learning tool: it does not replace a teacher, a dictionary or a reference grammar, and we do not guarantee any academic or professional result. The pronunciation shown (in the International Phonetic Alphabet) is an approximate guide, and the service has no audio.
9. Availability and liability
- Pictolang is provided "as is". We aim for a continuous service, but we cannot promise that it will be free of interruptions or errors. Content may be added, changed or removed.
- To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damages (loss of data, time or profits) and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the event.
- Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability in case of gross or intentional fault, nor the rights that the law gives you as a consumer and that you cannot waive.
10. Suspension and end of access
- You may delete your account at any time from your account area: deletion is immediate and final, and cannot be undone. Your access (trial or plan) ends with the account. Except as provided in article 5, the end of your account does not entitle you to a refund of the unused part of the plan.
- End of the trial or plan. When your trial or your plan ends, your account stays open but limited: you can sign in, view your progress and your set-aside words, read the help, choose a plan, delete your account, close your sessions and reset your progress; you can no longer take quizzes. Access returns as soon as you choose a plan.
- Inactive account. An individual account is deleted 90 days after your last sign-in; if you have a paid plan, these 90 days are counted from the end of the paid period or your last sign-in, whichever is later. An account whose paid plan is in progress is never deleted for this reason. We send no email before this deletion: to keep your account, sign in again before the deadline.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms (article 6 in particular) or that is used fraudulently or abusively.
- Organization accounts. For an organization account, the end of access and the deletion follow article 15.
11. Emails and personal information
We write to you only by service emails, related to your account, your access or your plan, to the security of the service, or to a change to these terms. These service emails are necessary for the operation of the account; to stop receiving them, delete your account.
We send no promotions and no newsletters.
An account without an email address never receives any.
The handling of your personal information is described in our privacy policy.
12. Changes to the terms
We may change these terms. For a significant change, we notify you with at least 30 days' notice by email or by a notice in the service. If you continue to use the service after the change takes effect, you accept it; otherwise, you may delete your account. A change does not alter the length or the price of a plan already paid. The date at the top of this page shows the version in force.
13. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any dispute falls within the jurisdiction of the competent courts of Quebec. If you are a consumer, this clause does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence, nor of the right to bring proceedings before the courts of your place of residence where the law guarantees it to you.
14. Miscellaneous
- If a provision of these terms is held invalid, the others remain in force.
- These terms are written in English, which is the version that governs; a French translation is provided for convenience. If the two versions differ, the English version prevails.

15. Organizations (accounts provided by an organization)
Principle. A school, company or body (the "organization") may buy from Logiciels Scalinata inc., by invoice, a number of seats for a fixed period, without automatic renewal: access stops on the end date and nothing is charged. The organization's administrator or administrators distribute the seats to members of the organization. Each organization member has their own account and their own progress. An organization member's access is provided by the organization: there is no free trial, no individual plan and no personal free access code for such an account. The invoice for an organization plan is issued and paid through Paddle.com, our official reseller (Merchant of Record), which acts as the seller; the plan is activated once Paddle confirms the payment.
Organization declaration. Before creating accounts or accepting any, an organization administrator accepts, on behalf of the organization, a declaration: the organization has the right to create and manage these accounts; for any minor (under 18, or under the age of majority in their country), it holds the authorization of the parent or guardian required by law (in Quebec, Law 25, notably for children under 14), and Logiciels Scalinata inc. does not collect any consent in its place; it informs its organization members that the organization sees their progress; it provides only the minimum of information. The organization is responsible for the collection of the personal information it sends us and answers for this declaration.
What the organization sees and can do. The organization administrator sees, for each organization member, the words seen, the words answered correctly, the words set aside, the languages chosen and the latest activity, never the text of the answers. The administrator creates and removes accounts. For an account without an email address, the administrator can have a new random temporary password generated: they can never read a password or choose one. Each organization member is informed, in the service, that their organization sees their progress.
Accounts without an email address. For primary-school students, the organization may create accounts without an email address: a login identifier and a temporary password that the person replaces at their first sign-in, with a pseudonym or a number as the only data. Such an account receives no email, no notification, no advertising. A forgotten password is replaced by the organization administrator.
Email addresses. An organization member with an email address uses an address from a domain declared by their organization. That domain is then no longer used for an individual sign-up. Google sign-in is not offered to organization members.
End of access. At the end of the period, in case of suspension, or when the organization administrator removes an organization member, access is blocked (there is no read-only mode). Ninety (90) days later, the account and its data are deleted. The organization's dashboard flags that the end of access is approaching; an organization that extends it before the deletion gets its accounts back. A removed organization member cannot join another organization with the same account.
Rights of individuals. An organization member exercises their rights over their information with the organization administrator, or by writing to us through the contact form on the scalinatasoftware.com site (an account without an email address goes through its organization administrator). An organization member's account is managed by their organization: there is no self-service deletion for it.
